Welcome to Phoenix, Arizona.
Phoenix is the capital of the state of Arizona in the Southwestern United States. It is Arizona's largest city and the Phoenix metropolitan area is the largest metro area in the state, with well over half of the total state population. Phoenix is located in the center of the state, 118 miles (188 km) northwest of Tucson.
Phoenix was incorporated as a city on February 25, 1881 and is called Hoozdo, or "the place is hot", in the Navajo language and Fiinigis in the Western Apache language.

The Salt River course runs westward through the city of Phoenix; the riverbed is normally dry except when excess runoff forces the release of water from the four dams upriver. The city of Tempe has built two inflatable dams in the Salt River bed to create a year-round recreational lake, called Tempe Town Lake. The dams are deflated to allow the river to flow unimpeded during releases.
The Phoenix area is surrounded by the McDowell Mountains to the northeast, the White Tank Mountains to the west, the Superstition Mountains far to the east, and the Sierra Estrella to the southwest. Within the city are the Phoenix Mountains and South Mountains. Current development (as of 2005) is pushing rapidly beyond the geographic boundaries to the north and west, south through Pinal County towards Tucson, and beginning to surround the large Salt River and Gila River reservations.
The Arizona Biltmore Hotel is a resort located in Phoenix near 24th Street and Camelback. Noted for its distinct architecture and luxurious amenities, the Arizona Biltmore has long been among the most luxurious in the Phoenix region and recently joined the Hilton Hotels' luxury collection, The Waldorf-Astoria Collection.
Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park is an Arizona state park located near Phoenix, Arizona in the United States. It consists of a 323 acre (130 hectare) botanical collection that includes a wide range of habitats and a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) main loop walking trail. Founded in 1925, the arboretum is the largest and oldest botanical garden in the state of Arizona. It is jointly managed by the University of Arizona and Arizona State Parks.
Camelback Mountain is a mountain of 2,704 foot elevation in Phoenix, Arizona. The name is derived from its shape, which resembles the two humps and head of a bactrian camel. Interestingly, a period of missing time amounting to almost a billion and a half years is represented by the division between the two rock formations which comprise the mountain. The higher part of the peak is Precambrian age granite, around 1700 million years old. This mountain is a very popular hiking destination for locals and visitors to the Valley.
Castles N' Coasters is an amusement park in Phoenix, featuring the Desert Storm Rollercoaster. Castles N' Coasters is located in northwest Phoenix, near Metrocenter Mall and just off I-17. Castles N' Coasters is home to four miniature golf courses and a large arcade featuring one of the largest pinball machine collections in the Southwest.
